Different types of wood that we stock and where they come from.
Mesquite - Prosopis sp

Our champion firewood. Harvested from the rugged and dry northern cape landscape this sought after wood is well known in the USA as a top quality firewood. It is especially prized for use in "Mesquite BBQ" a specific cooking method that is popular in Southern States in the USA. Originally brought to SA for its usefulness as a fodder and firewood plant in water scarce areas, these Fabaceae have become a massive water draining problem on the already low rainfall regions of the Northern Cape.
Gum trees - Eucalyptus sp

Commonly mistaken as a "Softwood" all species of Eucalyptus are hardwoods.
These large trees are a country-wide problem and can be found everywhere from roadside picnic stops to school playgrounds.
Well known the world over as a top notch fuel-wood or "kaggel-hout" this wood delivers excellent performance in contained combustion scenarios such as wood burning fireplaces or in pizza ovens. Ours is harvested form invaded riverbeds in the Overberg and Garden Route regions of South Africa
Black Wattle - Acacia Maersnii

Black Wattle or Early Green WattleBlack wattle is the most widespread invasive alien tree in South Africa, and serious infestations occur in the higher rainfall regions of the country. These trees have become a menace in all major river systems in the Western Cape as well as in high-lying areas where they are displacing indigenous Fynbos . They further endanger the habitats they invade as these trees are known for growing rapidly in tight thickets, which can substantially increase fuel loads that lead to worsened wild-fires.
"Rooikrans/ Rooipitjie"
Coastal Wattle - Acacia Cyclops

These salt hardy Australian plants were brought to South Africa for the primary purpose of stabilizing shifting sand dunes in the Western Cape. However, they have ecome a widespread problem in coastal areas as they displace the endemic vegetation in sensitive coastal habitats.
To many this wood is the "Flavor of the Cape" and its synonymous with a traditional Snoek braai.
A high density hardwood that is often harvested and sold "Freshly cut" leaving many thinking that it is difficult to light and very "smokey" however, our properly seasoned Rooikrans will have you falling in love with your seafood braai or family potjie all over again.
